RIVER OF LIFE CHURCH

Teaching vs Training

We need teaching and training, as they serve distinct purposes in the church.

Teaching focuses on imparting knowledge and nurturing spiritual growth by transmitting doctrine and fostering a deeper understanding of faith. Through vehicles such as sermons, Bible studies and Sunday school discussions, teaching educates you in the knowledge of truth.

On the other hand, training centers around developing practical skills and competencies. It aims to equip you with practical solutions for managing a wholesome and joyous lifestyle that pleases God. While training includes aspects of leadership development, discipleship programs and specialized ministries, it goes beyond mere preparation for service. That’s the churchy stuff. Practical training must also include workshops, hands-on experience and coaching that emphasize real-life application and manifestation of the kingdom’s principles.

Consider this distinction in Proverbs 22:6, and more comparatively in 2 Timothy 3:16, where the Bible explicitly juxtaposes doctrine and instruction.

Good preaching, teaching, training, and coaching work in harmony to develop you spiritually and holistically. Neglecting any aspect would be counterproductive. Jesus taught in John 8:31-36 that intimate knowledge of the truth frees you. With this understanding, training is the personal vehicle that unbridles and liberates you, allowing the Spirit of truth to inform, govern and empower your life.
